Picture windows
Picture windows are fixed windows that do not open. With no sash to seal, they give the most glass and the best thermal numbers for a given frame, and they are where large and shaped openings happen.
2 lines we track come in picture windows, in 2 frame materials: all-wood (1), aluminum-clad wood (1).
By frame material
Every picture window line we track
| FrameThe frame material. Aluminum-clad wood has a timber frame with an aluminum skin outside; all-wood shows timber on both faces. | OperationHow the window opens: casement, awning, hung, sliding, tilt-turn or fixed. The symbols show the hinge side or travel direction. | ImpactTested to withstand wind-borne debris (ASTM E1886/E1996). Required in hurricane debris regions unless shutters are used. | GlazingThe number of glass panes in the sealed unit: double, triple or quad. More panes insulate better and weigh more. | InstallHow the unit attaches to the opening: nail fin, flush fin, block frame or replacement insert. | Verified | ||||||||

What to check before you specify picture windows
- Size and design pressure
- The largest size a line offers is usually rated at a lower design pressure than smaller units. Check the rating at your actual size and wind exposure.
- Direct-glazed or sash-set
- Direct-glazed units set the glass straight into the frame for the slimmest sightlines. Sash-set units match the sightlines of the operable windows beside them.
- Safety glass
- Codes require tempered or laminated glass in hazardous locations: near doors, near floors, beside tubs and showers, and in some large panes. Flag these on the schedule.
- Mulling
- Picture windows are often joined to operable units for ventilation and egress. Ask whether the maker factory-mulls the combination and to what overall size.
- Delivery and handling
- Very large units can need a crane, special crating or engineering review. Ask before you commit to the opening size.
Common questions
- Are picture windows more energy efficient than opening windows?
- Usually, yes. With no sash and no operable seals, a fixed window has less frame and less air leakage, so it often posts the best U-factor and air leakage in a line.
- How big can a picture window be?
- It depends on the glass, the frame and the wind load. Each line lists a maximum tested size and rating; units beyond that are often possible after the maker's engineering review.
- Can a picture window be used for egress?
- No. Egress needs an opening window. Pair the picture window with an operable unit that meets the egress size, or use a casement or tilt-turn in that room.
- Do picture windows need tempered glass?
- Only in hazardous locations as the code defines them, such as close to doors, low to the floor or beside a tub or shower. Elsewhere, standard annealed insulating glass is allowed.
