Windows for custom homes

Custom homes are where window choice shows most: big openings, specific colors and divided-lite patterns, and a mix of operators across elevations. Pick lines with the size range and finish options the design needs, plus a lead time the framing schedule can absorb.

Baseline we filter on

Nail fin or Flush fin or Block frame

This is a starting point, not a code requirement. Local code, design pressures and the owner's needs set the actual numbers.

What else to watch on these projects

Order early
Clad wood and aluminum lines often run 8–16 weeks. Order from framed rough openings or approved shop drawings, not from the plans.
Egress
Every sleeping room needs an egress window. Casements meet the minimum clear opening at smaller sizes than hung windows.
Safety glazing
Glass near doors, tubs, stairs and low to the floor must be tempered. Note it on the window schedule so it gets ordered.

Common questions

How far ahead should I order custom windows?
Plan on 8–16 weeks for clad wood and aluminum, and 4–8 weeks for most fiberglass and vinyl. Lead time starts at order, so confirm rough openings first.
